After leaving Bar Harbor, we ventured down the coast to just south of Portland near Scarborough. We stayed at the SAC Sun Outdoors Saco Old Orchard Beach Resort. Our goal here was to make sure we rode the Eastern Trail which is another HoF Rail Trail on our bucket list.

At the north end of the trail is the Bug Light lighthouse in South Portland at the Bug Light Park. Also in the park is a nice and informative memorial and walls telling the stories of the Liberty Ships which were built here in WWII.

The Eastern Trail is also part of the overall East Coast Greenway vision that will travel from ME to FL.

This true rail trail is not paved, but had a decent crushed stone surface in most parts.

In addition to wooded portions, there are water views in many places on the ride.

The trail is 29 miles long and avoids annoying road crossings in most places.

Although most of the trail looks similar to this, there are a few on road connectors that use lightly traveled roads to provide connections in areas where the trail was developed for other purposes in some places.

This is a view of the Nonesuch River that flows through one of the nature preserves that the trail rides through.

One thing we found out on the ride was that apparently Portland has a large ship cruise port. We could see the port from Bug Light Park in South Portland.

One evening we went to the coast to have a seafood dinner on the waterfront at the Stern Seafood Restaurant in Pine Point. The last few weeks I have grown a greater appreciation for fresh oysters and have taken advantage of my seaside locations to get them.
From here we will travel to Massachusetts to explore the state in several areas to ride more HoF rail trails and see some more historical locations from Salem, Boston, Plymouth, Cape Cod, and Provincetown. Check my blog for my next post...
